The recycling of asphalt pavements often requires reclamation of their binders, trying to give them a composition and a behaviour similar to those that would be chosen for a new one given the same conditions of site and traffic. In order to adapt softening asphalts or agents specially designed for this purpose, it is necessary to first identify the characteristics of old binders, using not only the classical tests: penetration, softening point r and b, fraass point and asphaltenes content, but also other tests for example gel permeation chromatography which is used for a quick examination of asphalt. The study of reclaiming agents determines: -their characteristics, which should permit conclusions to be drawn as to their compatibility with the aged binder, -their efficacity by the examination of their influence on the aged binder, -the behaviour of the mixture, compared to that of a new asphalt of same characteristics in the same conditions of use. Up to now we have tested 14 products found in France and they show a large enough range of characteristics to cover almost all the kinds of reuse after reclamation. In 1981, the laboratories of ponts et chaussees tested several recycling works. This has permitted them to ascertain the efficacity of some of these products. The examination of their behaviour on the roads will give US an answer to the main question: to know how the reclaimed bituminous mixtures will behave when compared with the classic mixtures.(a) for the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 815173.
