ABOUT THE VARIABILITY OF THE RESULTS OF THE MARSHALL TEST --BITUMEN, FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE. 3RD EUROBITUME SYMPOSIUM 1985, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS, SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1985
It is well-known that the Marshall test is still today the most used laboratory method for the evaluation of the properties of a bituminous concrete. Actually, more and more criticisms are made of this kind of experimentation, from the lack of a sufficient correlation between the stress really borne by the concrete in situ and those which are simulated in the laboratory samples, to the consideration of a rather important dispersion of results, given both by the laboratory operator (human factor) and by the bigger or smaller definition of the test standards (normative factor). Consequently, this situation has led to a diversification of national standards, each of them tending to improve the reliability of the results, and to a research into new test methods, intending both to get the best guarantee of reproducibility and to simulate with less differentiation the behaviour of the bituminous concrete under the road loads. The experimental research carried out by the laboratory of the road institute of the faculty of engineering of the university of bari, waiting for a definitive judgement of approval or dismissal of the test, intends to verify the importance of the effects that the following factors induce on the results: -time of storage of the laboratory samples; -test temperature (depending on the kind of bitumen); - temperature of manufacture of the mixes; -time elapsing between the extraction of the laboratory samples from the thermostatic tank and their testing; -compaction. It also intends to verify the variability of the results when the laboratory samples are subjected to successive cycles of temperature variations. The processing of data, accomplished with a statistical approach too, has confirmed (with the necessary reserves caused by the restricted number of the tests made) some doubts about the validity of some standards.
