BETTER VALUE FROM ASPHALT TECHNOLOGY --BITUMEN, FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE. 3RD EUROBITUME SYMPOSIUM 1985, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS, SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1985
Whilst most technical papers attempt to describe the detailed results of aspects of bituminous materials this paper attempts to pull together a philosophy for the validation and implementation of asphalt technology without which much research and technical work is wasted. It will attempt to show that without sensible and practical use of known results the best value will not be obtained from bituminous materials and hence their use and growth will be impeded. The author believes that far too much effort is spent on investigation and too little on application and unless it is applied, research effort is wasted. It is vital to know and measure the performance of bituminous materials before evaluation can occur and the author as a member of the construction board of the UK institution of highways and transportation was part of the team investigating performance feedback of flexible pavements in 1982. The results reported indicate that all base types generally performed better than design expectancy but both concrete and bituminous surfacings generally do not. Also concrete roads and bituminous bases appear to have similar lives. Substantial improvements in the performance of bituminous materials are being achieved by the implementation of known and often simple asphalt technology particularly by increasing thickness, better compaction, optimising materials, mix and pavement design and with more realistic specifications. The introduction of better techniques such as full depth or total asphalt, pervious macadams, modified binders and foamed bitumen also result in better value but their acceptance has been needlessly slow. It will be the enthusiasm and determination of better trained and more experienced technologists who will ultimately achieve better value from asphalt technology.
