RELATIONS ENTRE LE COMPORTEMENT RHEOLOGIQUE DES BITUMES ROUTIERS ET LEUR CARACTERISATION PAR CHROMATOGRAPHIE SUR GEL PERMEABLE

One of the primary objectives of the investigations on pavement binders conducted at the lcpc is to establish relations between their generic composition, their micromorphologies (colloidal structures), and their rheological properties as evaluated by a few simple techniques of characterization, such as viscometry or sinusoidal viscoelastimetry. This rheological behaviour can be correlated with performance characteristics. The results presented in this paper show that it is possible to compare data obtained under special conditions by gel permeation chromatography -the interaction peak (image of the intermicellar interactions specific to the colloidal structure of the bitumen) -to the width of the spectrum of relaxation times estimated from the curves obtained by eliminating frequency and temperature in the expression of the complex modulus and plotting its phase angle versus the logarithm of its absolute value. In the case of "new" bitumens, it is shown that the width of the relaxation spectra is in linear correlation with the height of the interaction peak, with both values being related to the intensity of the air-blowing undergone by the bitumen in the course of its preparation. This correlation is confirmed in the case of bitumens artificially aged in the rolling thin film oven test and of bitumens aged naturally on roads. However, elementary precautions must be taken in the application of gpc to the characterization of the colloidal structures of bitumens: the method is repeatable over a relatively short interval of time, but its reproducibility is hard to master.(a) for the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 815173.
