NEW SPANISH SPECIFICATIONS FOR HYDROCARBON BINDERS --BITUMEN, FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE. 3RD EUROBITUME SYMPOSIUM 1985, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS, SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1985

During the period 1982 to 1984, new Spanish specifications for bituminous binders have been issued by a committee of representatives from the ministry of public works, refining companies, manufacturers and the construction industry. These specifications pay special attention to asphaltic bitumens, now referred to as petroleum bitumens, because of their importance, the variety of crude petroleum sources available in Spain and the new production and testing techniques for these materials. Tests are in two groups, one group for the original bitumen and the second for the residue after heating at 163 deg c (tfot). A new and softer binder, 200/300, has been specified for the recycling of materials. For ecological and energy conservation reasons, the grades of cutback have been reduced to six; three rapid-cure and three medium-cure. Higher viscosity binders fluxed with tar oils are specified to replace cutback for surface dressing. Bitumen emulsion specifications have undergone many changes, and a new high viscosity emulsion, ecr3, is included for the surface dressing of heavily trafficked roads. New tentative specifications are given for four emulsions, two of modified rheology (high flow) and two for aggregate coating. Only five tar types are included, these being little used in Spain. During the period, in order to establish acceptance and variability of the tests, a correlation programme involving 15 laboratories was carried out.(a) for the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 815173.
