A CASE STUDY OF LONG DISTANCE JACKING WITH GLASS REINFORCED CONCRETE PIPES --NO-DIG 87. 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION ON TRENCHLESS CONSTRUCTION FOR UTILITIES, APRIL 14-16, 1987 (INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY)

Pipe jacking is a particularly important method of installation in Japan, where open cut techniques are no longer preferred in densely populated cities. Widespread adoption of this method for medium and larger pipes has focussed interest on the economies of longer distance jacking. Glass reinforced concrete jacking pipes have been developed by the Japan superline pipe association using technology licensed from the UK. Laboratory tests have shown that these pipes have high axial compressive strength and may be particularly suitable for long distance jacking. An installation trial was carried out in kawanishi city, hyogo prefecture, using both superline and traditional steel reinforced concrete pipe. The case study describes the construction works and includes theoretical comparison of jacking capability and an analysis of construction costs. It reports detailed calculation of jacking forces and the effects of lubrication and records in situ measurements of actual jacking forces and the strains generated in the pipes.
