HIGH RESOLUTION RADAR IMAGING OF SUB-SURFACE ANOMALITIES --NO-DIG 87. 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION ON TRENCHLESS CONSTRUCTION FOR UTILITIES, APRIL 14-16, 1987 (INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY)

While there has been considerable development of equipment for the location of buried metallic plant, there is nothing available at a reasonable cost for buried non-metallic plant. Radar techniques offer a solution to this problem and have been investigated by a number of organisations throughout the world. The feasibility of the technique has been established for targets such as pipes, voids, structures and geological strata. To date the performance and cost of equipment has restricted its use to specialist operators. This paper describes the principle of the technique, discusses its strengths and limitations, and illustrates applications for sub-surface radar by reference to work that era technology has carried out. An objective for future development is to realise an economical system which can be used routinely in site investigation. The radar developed by era has demonstrated the ability to provide high resolution images of buried objects or features and has achieved considerable success in locating and identifying objects as small as 50 mm. The current system uses a low cost microcomputer to carry out signal processing and it is envisaged that to reduce potential cost still further, a basic radar could employ a dedicated microprocessor. A variety of applications exists for sub-surface exploration by radar techniques of which the short pulse design has proved the most successful.
