IMAGE RECONSTRUCTION WITH GROUND PENETRATING RADAR DATA --NO-DIG 87. 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION ON TRENCHLESS CONSTRUCTION FOR UTILITIES, APRIL 14-16, 1987 (INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY)
The US navy, like other organizations, has experienced the problem of encountering underground objects unexpectedly because of a deficiency in the technology to perform accurate and reliable underground mapping surveys. To mitigate this problem, we have been pursuing hardware and software developments in several areas of ground penetrating radar (gpr) technology. This paper reports on a successful software development that overcomes one of the major deficiencies, data reduction. Data reduction techniques are deficient because of the difficulty in interpreting the recorded data due to included clutter, noise, and extraneous reflections. The developed software program, which is based on a time domain synthetic aperture focusing technique (saft), processes returned gpr signals and reconstructs images of the objects at their proper underground locations. The program incorporates a procedure to determine the velocity of propagation of the electromagnetic signals through the ground profile at each target. This velocity is then used to determine the actual depth of each target. This paper summarizes the capabilities of this software program and its effectiveness in processing gpr data to obtain reconstructed images of the underground objects.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 815134.
