BEHAVIOUR OF CYCLISTS AT INTERSECTIONS --ROAD USER BEHAVIOR. THEORY AND RESEARCH. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ROAD SAFETY HELD IN GRONINGEN, NETHERLANDS, AUGUST 1987

Results of an analysis of cyclists' behaviour at intersections were presented in this chapter. In the analysis, normative and observed behaviour of cyclists were compared and a measure of agreement determined. This analysis was part of a larger explorative study of the behaviour of cyclists at intersections. The aim of this study was to investigate: (1) the influence of situational characteristics of intersections on the behaviour of cyclists; and (2) the relationship between the personal characteristics of cyclists (e.g. Age, experience) and their behaviour. The situational aspects studied were: (a) traffic intensity flow on the main road (high versus medium); (b) presence or absence of traffic priority regulations; and (c) type of intersection (4-leg intersection versus t-junction).
