DRIVERS' ATTITUDE ON SEAT BELT USE --ROAD USER BEHAVIOR. THEORY AND RESEARCH. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ROAD SAFETY HELD IN GRONINGEN, NETHERLANDS, AUGUST 1987

There has been a significant reduction in fatalities and injuries as a result of seat belt legislation. For this reason, in many countries the usage of seat belts in motor vehicles is obligatory. In 1981, Yugoslavia introduced this legislation, and on January 1985 legislation was passed making the use of the front seat belts compulsory, with penalties for non-usage. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of compulsory seat belt legislation upon the reported seat belt usage among the population of serbia (Yugoslavia). The second aim of the study was to assess drivers' attitudes towards compulsory seat belt usage and to determine the relative importance of the attitudinal factors influencing usage. The study also investigates the differences between seat belt users and non-users with respect to driver characteristics such as age, years of driving, education, professional status, accidents and violation history.
