THE EXPOSURE OF SPANISH CHILDREN TO ACCIDENT RISK AS PEDESTRIANS --ROAD USER BEHAVIOR. THEORY AND RESEARCH. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ROAD SAFETY HELD IN GRONINGEN, NETHERLANDS, AUGUST 1987

When the Spanish traffic education centre was founded in 1985, the foremost question was: which educational objectives should be formulated for developing intervention strategies. It seemed appropriate to follow existing models, but there were no data available concerning the exposure of Spanish children to accident risk as pedestrians. Because these data were necessary, a system of data collection was used. Parents of a sample of 1000 Spanish children between 4 and 14 years of age were asked to report the traffic participation of their child on two days: the last school day, and the last holiday day. Preliminary conclusions are: (1) a sudden change in the type of accompaniment of children appears around the age of 6 or 7; after this age children appear to free themselves from supervision; (2) the use of certain types of roads in relation to size of the community should also be emphasized; and (3) another aspect which should be taken into account is that small children in rural areas have much more night-time exposure to traffic than children in urban areas, therefore such children would require specific training in this respect.
