As the engineer can specify materials used in construction, the bioengineer can accurately specify plant species and methods of propagation to achieve an engineered design. The terminology of plant specification is international. Species can be specified by their generic names, life-form, life-span, rates of growth and rooting system. In new construction works seed (sexual) and woody transplant (asexual) propagation of vegetation virtually dominates. Bioengineering utilises many other methods of asexual propagation. Knowledge of plants enables the bioengineer to determine the most suitable plants to solve specific site problems. The mechanical effects of plants on the prevention of soil surface erosion and the mass movement of soil are discussed.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 814174.
