ROADS IN URBAN AREAS. REPORT FROM DENMARK --PIARC XVIII WORLD ROAD CONGRESS, BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, SEPTEMBER 13-19, 1987

This report describes research done in Denmark on bicycle routes in towns. In 1984 the government granted exceptionally dkr 10 m to four Danish towns in order to allow them as pilot projects to establish bicycle routes through dense urban areas. The aim of this project has been to produce various solutions and gain experience in making bicycle routes in places where conventional solutions are not applicable. In dense urban areas there is often very little room in the streets, and the varied traffic together with high speed cause many road accidents. A wide range of solutions have been tried out. As part of the project a series of before/after studies have been made on the effects of the bicycle routes. The before studies were conducted in 1984 before the paths were established in 1984-1985, the after studies during 1986. Therefore it will not be possible to present the results and conclusions before the congress in Brussels in 1987. In consequence this paper will only deal with the background for the bicycle route projects and the contents of the before/after studies.(a) for the covering abstracts of the congress see IRRD 812115 and 812116.
