INTERURBAN ROADS AND MOTORWAYS. REPORT FROM HUNGARY --PIARC XVIII WORLD ROAD CONGRESS, BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, SEPTEMBER 13-19, 1987

This report gives details of the national road network development plan for Hungary, and of the new methods used in the planning process: traffic forecasts, cost-benefit analyses of alternative networks, effects on the environment, public participation. It is planned to connect the radial trunk network by means of transverse roads. It is intended to double the length of classified roads. Because of environmental effects, guidelines are being prepared for determining when by-passes should be constructed. A new standard governing highway design was published. The standard applies to motorways, rural roads and urban streets. Details are given of the equipment used for motorway operation and surveillance, and examples are given of an information system set up on motorway m7. The use of radio and telecommunication for transmitting traffic information is mentioned. For the covering abstracts of the congress see IRRD 812115 and 812116.
