INTERURBAN ROADS AND MOTORWAYS. REPORT FROM THE USSR --PIARC XVIII WORLD ROAD CONGRESS, BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, SEPTEMBER 13-19, 1987

This report covers the main features of road building as carried out in the USSR, experience in applying the traffic conflicts technique for evaluating relative danger of road sections and an automated road design system being evolved at present. Described in this report are environmental preservation measures taken when building motorways in the caucasus and in lithuanian ssr, methods of evaluation of economic efficiency of protective measures against traffic noise. Proposals are given for different speed limit levels on multilane roads and motorways. A new portable skid-resistance tester is characterized and basic ideas on new road design standards recently adopted in the USSR are presented. New, more exactly defined, criteria for detection of dangerous road sections have been proposed and methods of road reconstruction design are presented.
