CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF RIGID PAVEMENTS. REPORT FROM BELGIUM --PIARC XVIII WORLD ROAD CONGRESS, BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, SEPTEMBER 13-19, 1987

This report takes into account recent developments in concrete road technology in Belgium. It contains a description of various experimental sites and various notable construction works achieved over the last few years. The main subjects dealt with are as follows: (1) design - typical structures according to traffic. -concrete block pavements design. -maintenance strategies and intervention thresholds; (2) construction and inspection -abutments and construction joints in continuously reinforced concrete pavement. -achievement of surface evenness, and its control. -use of porous concrete for construction of emergency lanes. -recycling of concrete pavement in an unbonded base; (3) experimental sections -experience on the n4 with various types of contraction joints. -steel fibre reinforced concrete pavements at Brussels national airport; -thin overlays of steel fibre reinforced concrete and continuously reinforced concrete. -forest and vilvorde experiments on bases with pozzolanic binder; (4) notable construction works -concrete pavements in outer and inner harbour at zeebrugge. -concrete block pavements between railway tracks. -dramatic developments in New Jersey type safety barriers.(a) for the covering abstracts of the congress see IRRD 812115 and 812116.
