CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. REPORT FROM YUGOSLAVIA --PIARC XVIII WORLD ROAD CONGRESS, BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, SEPTEMBER 13-19, 1987

The method of practical design of new pavements in Yugoslavia is defined by the jus u.c4.012 standard, and derives from the aasho-method. Design diagrams are drawn for each of the three basic types of new pavements. The asphalt-layer thicknesses arrived at by this procedure are very similar to the ones arrived at by means of various foreign methods. Also considered is the influence of error, caused by using imprecise or inaccurate values of certain input parameters. Original equations of the aasho-test form the basis of diagrams for the calculation of asphalt-concrete strengthening thicknesses for flexible pavements. If the basic requirements of the aasho-test regarding load, materials or other elements are not met, design is carried out by means of semi-theoretical methods and procedures. The chapters on materials deal with composition and construction of bound-macadam road bases, and some characteristic properties of asphalt road-mixes obtained by combining new and recycled material. Pavements with road bases of unbound granular stone material are discussed through an analysis of results obtained on test road sections. In one case, the influence of water in the subgrade and unbound sub-base on deflection-measured bearing capacity was assessed and seasonal correction factors were established; in another, it was found that natural-sand can be used as a permanent road base in a well designed pavement. The chapter on semi-rigid pavements presents the results of research into the influence of the composition of cement stabilised layers on their mechanical properties and pavement bearing capacity, as well as an original example, for Yugoslavia at least, of a concrete pavement strengthened with a cement stabilised layer.(a) for the covering abstracts of the congress see IRRD 812115 and 812116.
