Research in Portugal was carried out on: site investigation and the successful application of the electric resistivity method for detecting underground cavities at an airport in the azores; the use of unstable materials (shales, pumice stone and rock fills) in embankment construction; use of geotextiles in the widening and repair of embankments; slope protection and limitations of the use of blasting in excavation operations. The design and construction of drainage systems was also investigated together with inspection and repair techniques.
