EARTHWORKS - DRAINAGE - SUBGRADE. REPORT FROM PORTUGAL --PIARC XVIII WORLD ROAD CONGRESS, BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, SEPTEMBER 13-19, 1987
Research in Portugal was carried out on: site investigation and the successful application of the electric resistivity method for detecting underground cavities at an airport in the azores; the use of unstable materials (shales, pumice stone and rock fills) in embankment construction; use of geotextiles in the widening and repair of embankments; slope protection and limitations of the use of blasting in excavation operations. The design and construction of drainage systems was also investigated together with inspection and repair techniques. A study was made of the design of capping layers in the subgrade and assessment of their bearing capacity. For the covering abstracts of the congress see IRRD 812115 and 812116.
