SOME LONG TIME STUDIES OF BLENDED CEMENTS WITH EMPHASIS ON ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION --PROCEEDINGS OF THE 7TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CONCRETE ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTIONS, OTTAWA, CANADA, 1986

Portland cement pastes and blended cement pastes containing opal, calcined shale and class f fly ash blended at various addition levels were hydrated up to 14 years at 73 deg f and 100% relative humidity. Pastes cured for 14 years were analyzed for alkalies. It was found that a considerable amount of alkali did not leach out of blended cement pastes compared to portland cement pastes. The amount of alkali retained (not leached) depends on the nature and the amount of pozzolan used. A plot of calcium hydroxide produced as a function of curing time and pozzolanic addition levels up to 14 years showed a maximum which was quite pronounced in some cases.
