THE EFFECT OF MINERAL ADMIXTURES ON THE ALKALI-SILICA EXPANSION OF CONCRETE UNDER OUTDOOR EXPOSURE CONDITIONS --PROCEEDINGS OF THE 7TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CONCRETE ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTIONS, OTTAWA, CANADA, 1986
The results of experiments to establish the effects of different mineral admixtures on the expansion of concretes, made with alkali-reactive greywacke/hornfels aggregate and high-alkali cement, are discussed. The concrete specimens were exposed outdoors and the results should be applicable to concrete structures in practice. The following mineral admixtures were used: milled granulated blast-furnace slag (mgbs); fly ash; calcined shale; and condensed silica fume. The cubes and beams tested were exposed outdoors for 4 and 6 years respectively. The results obtained indicated that replacement of cement by mgbs, fly ash, or silica fume can be effective in preventing expansion due to the alkali-silica reaction. Details are provided of the quantities of each that are needed in order to be effective for specified active alkali contents of the concrete.
