RAPID MATERIALS RECONNAISSANCE FOR A CALCRETE ROAD IN BOTSWANA. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SEVENTH REGIONAL CONFERENCE FOR AFRICA ON SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING, ACCRA JUNE 1980. VOL II

The combined use of airphotos, a helicopter, plant indicators and portable, rapid probing devices for a quick (three-day) materials reconnaissance for a road in botswana led to the location of calcretes and calcified sands which had been missed by three conventional ground surveys taking a total of several months. This finding permitted the timely adoption of a materials design solution which was considerably cheaper than the sand asphalt previously considered necessary. (TRRL)
