THE DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH-SOLIDS EPOXY POLYAMIDE COATING LINE

This article reviews the development of an updated line of high-build epoxy polyamide coatings that meet current VOC (volatile organic compounds) requirements, and were formulated to meet limitations that may emerge in the next decade. The preliminary studies are described, and a table illustrates the preliminary formulation of new pigment systems. The establishemt of optimum mix ratios for the low molecular weight, polyamide epoxy system for coatings foumulated as primers near 37% polyvinyl chloride (pvc) and as topcoats near 26% pvc is described. Formulation refinements are noted and the details are given of the formal testing program. The use of the aluminized primer is described. Aluminum primer formulation for improved water resistance is described, and color-based and aluminum-based primer systems are compared.
