NEW SPIRAL STEEL PIPE OFFERS DRAINAGE OPTIONS
Helically wound steel pipe which offers faster drainage was used in an 8,100-ft stormwater drainage system for a widening of the Newport Freeway (California 55). The use of the spiral rib pipe saved the California Department of Transportation more than $145,000. The anticipated service life of system is in excess of 50 years. The rib pipe has a Manning number of 0.011, lower and therefore better than those of corrugated steel pipe or reinforced concrete pipe. The installation rate of such pipe has averaged 800 ft per day.
