A HORSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR
Norfolk Southern's RoadRailer intermodal service is rapidly gaining success as the latest attempt by railroads to regain the strong hold in the freight delivery business from the trucking industry. The vehicles which use truck trailers, mounted directly on railroad wheels and operated in fast trains, are custom-built "unibody" dry vans that ride on two types of road-rail running gear and use two-man crews. They carry all kinds of commodities, manufactured, merchandise, and perishable freight. The history of the RoadRailer, its failures and its rise to success is further detailed.
