HOLLOW CYLINDER TESTS ON NATURAL ROCK SALTS

This paper describes a system for testing thin-walled hollow cylindrical specimens of salt subjected to axial load, internal pressure, and external pressure at temperatures between 20 and 200 deg C. Although other materials can be tested, the test system has been sized to accommodate large specimens, which are needed for a coarse-grained material, and the load and pressure capacities have been selected to match the relatively low strength of salt. The system is computer-controlled and permits sensitive, direct measurements of the change in specimen diameters. Results of validation tests are given to show that the apparatus produces data that are suitable to develop and test constitutive equations that the thermomechanical behavior of salt.
