RULES FOR EXTENDING BRIDGE LIFE
The foundation of Ontario's bridge management system is an extensive computerized inventory known as Ontario Structural Inventory System (OSIS). It contains data required for planning, design, construction, inspection, and maintenance. When a bridge is designed, such information as bridge type, materials used, and design cost is entered into the system. All bridges are inspected every two years, and information on bridge condition is updated after each inspection. Material and performance condition ratings as well as other information go into the Ontario Structure Inspection Management System (OSIMS) which is linked to OSIS. In addition, a detailed condition survey is performed about two years before a bridge is scheduled for rehabilitation in order to gather enough information to select the proper rehabilitation method and prepare contract documents.
