TRAVEL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PHYSICALLY DISABLED IN THE WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREA

The study investigated the occurrence of disabilities among the population of the Washington metropolitan area and the effect of these disabilities on the use of escalators which had been planned to provide the sole means of access to the Metro rapid rail system. Random telephone interviews were conducted in an attempt to determine the number of physically handicapped within the region; once handicapped individuals were determined through the random survey, follow-up interviews were conducted to provide more detailed information. Information is presented in the study on the nature of the disabilities among those who were interviewed, the use of special aids for mobility, employment status, income, present means of transportation, and a description of the recent types of trips which had been made in the area.
