AN INTERVIEW WITH SENATOR TOM HARKIN
Senator Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, gives his views on the role of public transportation in today's society, stating that small community and rural systems should receive a larger piece of transportation funds, that he will work towards achieving better coordination of resources and programs between human services agencies and the Department of Transportation for rural residents, the elderly and handicapped, that the flow of information and technical assistance to local human service agencies needs to be improved, that the Department of Agriculture needs to become more involved in assisting local officials to improve rural transit services and facilities and that regional meetings should be held so that the users of public and specialized transportation services can voice their opinions as to what their needs are which thus far have not been adequately addressed.
