ARMED WITH A VISUAL SAFETY FEATURE

Shaped like a figure eight and resembling a big metal bow tie when it is in position 10 feet in front of the bus is the description given of the crossing arm, a safety device which enables school bus drivers to illustrate to their riders just how far they are to walk in front of the bus when unloading and is credited with reducing fatalities in several states. The arm gives children a visual frame of reference, keeping them in the driver's sight and a safe distance from the bus. It is currently made of zinc phosphate coated aluminum and folds back flush against the front bumper when it is in a closed position. It can be operated either manually by the driver or activated when the bus doors are opened.
