MOUNTAIN PASSAGE

This article describes the history of the Mountain Springs route in California. Authority was granted in the 19th century to establish a toll road. It was one of California's first highway users tax. In the pre-interstate days of the 1950s, the daily traffic volume had reached 26,000 vehicles. Today, it is a 1,000% greater. Three major route extensions or widenings are under study or construction. Existing routes are being modified to accommodate rush hour traffic with the addition of auxiliary and high-occupancy vehicle lanes. Double decking of some roads, and toll roads are being discussed.
