Since their introduction into queensland in the early 1960'S there has been considerable success achieved in the use of cement treated pavements. However from time to time, some of the cement treated materials have not performed as predicted due to problems associated with design, construction or material properties. A considerable amount of investigation has gone into seeking solutions to these problems. The investigations carried out have involved field observations and testing, mathematical modelling, laboratory testing and more recently full scale accelerated load testing. Causes of the various problems which have occurred have been determined and solutions provided. The paper provides an account of successful applications as well as the problems and their resolution and suggests requirements necessary to achieve a predictable, dependable paving material (a).
