NEW MATERIALS FOR OLD PROBLEMS: INNOVATIVE DEVELOPMENTS IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING USING HIGH STRENGTH POLYMER GRID REINFORCEMENT --14TH ARRB CONFERENCE, 28 AUGUST - 2 SEPTEMBER, 1988, CANBERRA, ACT, AUSTRALIA; PROC. PARTS 1 - 8

High strength polymer grids, or geogrids were developed in the United Kingdom at the end of the seventies. Extensive research has been conducted in Europe and North America to investigate the various civil engineering applications for these materials. The availability of these high strength, durable reinforcing grids has led to many innovative and economical developments in geotechnical and highway engineering. This paper describes the major application areas for geogrids in highway engineering, with particular attention to the following areas: (i) reinforced soil walls and slopes; (II) reinstatement of slope failures; (III) reinforcement of road bases for paved roads; (IV) asphalt reinforcement and (v) embankment foundations over soft soil. The results of various research programs are discussed and the applications illustrated with a number of case studies from Europe and the Asia Pacific region (a). For the covering record of the conference, see IRRD no 808936.
