STRENGTHENING OF CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS WITH EPOXY-BONDED STEEL PLATES

An example of the use of bonded steel plates to strengthen a motorway bridge complex is described. Full-scale loading tests demonstrated that the required structural improvements had been achieved, and associated laboratory tests confirmed short-term strengthening effects. Uncertainties about long-term durability have led to an extensive programme of weathering tests. Early results from small-scale tests indicate the possibility of slightly reduced bond efficiency due to internal corrosion and indicate the need for improved anti-corrosion treatment to ensure a long trouble-free life.(a)
