COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO TRAFFIC NOISE IN VALENCIA CITY ---INTERNOISE 84. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION FOR NOISE CONTROL. PROCEEDINGS 1984 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NOISE CONTROL ENGINEERING, HONOLULU, HAWAII, 3-5 DECEMBER 1984, VOLUMES 1 AND 2.

This paper describes the results obtained from a public opinion poll about the nuisance caused by urban traffic noise to residents in high traffic areas of Valencia. The purpose of the survey was to verify that the equivalent sound level (leq) was a good index of sound nuisance. A questionnaire was sent to 725 households, all living on the 4th floor of buildings in 26 different streets. The streets were chosen for their high level of traffic. Sound measurements were taken from 8 am to 8 pm. The questionnaire was divided into three sections covering: (a) socioeconomic factors such as age, sex, or occupation; (B) personal habits, such as sleep time; and (c) opinions about the level of noise nuisance. The results showed that there was a good correlation between measured noise level and public awareness of noise nuisance. 81.4% of those questioned thought that their street was noisy, 37.2% were woken by traffic noise and 25.8% could not work at home properly because of the noise.
