ENGINEERING PROPERTY REQUIREMENTS FOR STRUCTURAL ADHESIVES
The subject of structural adhesive bonding is introduced by defining the main requirements for a successful joint, and by highlighting the important considerations for joint durability. The distinction is made between structural and semi-structural joints, and examples are given of structural steel-to-concrete bonding as used for the strengthening of buildings and bridge components in the UK. The body of the paper presents a proposed compliance spectrum for a two-part cold cure adhesive for the structural bonding of steel to concrete. The compliance spectrum outlines the chemical and physical form required of the adhesive and the necessary working characteristics while in the freshly mixed state. Mechanical properties of the hardened bulk adhesive and of steel-to-steel joints are specified, and appropriate test techniques described. In addition, requirements of the manufacturer in terms of providing quality control data, instruction sheets and packaging are proposed. The paper concludes by emphasizing the interdisciplinary understanding necessary for successful adhesive joint design, defining areas where further research is required and providing guidance as to where further information on the subject may be sought.(a)
