FEASIBILITY OF A HIGH SPEED RAILROAD CONNECTION BETWEEN BARCELONA AND THE FRENCH BORDER ---TRANSPORT POLICY. PROCEEDINGS OF SEMINAR A HELD AT THE PTRC TRANSPORT AND PLANNING SUMMER ANNUAL MEETING, UNIVERSITY OF BATH, ENGLAND 7-11 SEPTEMBER 1987. VOLUME P288
FAISABILITE D'UNE LIGNE DE CHEMIN DE FER A GRANDE VITESSE DE BARCELONNE JUSQU'A LA FRONTIERE
The paper describes the main points of the feasibility study for the link and analyses its importance in the European transport scene. A feasibility study for a railroad connection with UIC gauge between Barcelona and the French border has been carried out by the catalan government under the direction of the authors. Various technical possibilities have been considered, from rolling stock with variable width axles to a completely new layout for high speed trains. After a careful technical, financial and socioeconomic evaluation, this last option, allowing a 300 km/h speed along the link, has been selected as the only adequate proposal for the project. This railroad link is seen as a decisive step towards the integration of the iberian countries transport network in the European system and towards the badly needed modernization of the Spanish railways. Being the first concrete project for the supression of the pyrenean barrier to come out after the integration of Spain and Portugal in the eec, the project has also the very interesting aspect of having been promoted by a regional government. It is considered a landmark in European transport policy that should be adequately known by transport professionals and policy makers in europe.(a) for the covering abstract of the seminar see IRRD 816535.
