SPACE STRUCTURATION BY TRANSPORT. TWO FAMOUS EXAMPLES: THE TGV AND THE RER FRENCH SYSTEMS ---TRANSPORT POLICY. PROCEEDINGS OF SEMINAR A HELD AT THE PTRC TRANSPORT AND PLANNING SUMMER ANNUAL MEETING, UNIVERSITY OF BATH, ENGLAND 7-11 SEPTEMBER 1987. VOLUME P288
This paper is founded on two main hypothesis: (1) transport and space have always been interactive and (2) the main impact of transport on space is the creation and recreation of this space. The paper tries to explain a few environmental implications of two French experiences: the high speed train (tgv) and the regional express network (rer) -the tgv is studied at the interegional level on the paris-lyon axis (long distance traffic) and the rer is studied at the parisian regional level (short distance traffic under 60 km). In particular the following points are developed: trends in demand for passenger traffic; the shortening of distances; modernisation of transportation means; the economy of spatial restructuration by transport; the increasing mobility of people, the example of services activities, the example of tourism and holidays, the effects of restructuration over the traffic of transport companies.(a) for the covering abstract of the seminar see IRRD 816535.
