OBSERVATIONAL STUDY: DAYTIME USE OF HEADLAMPS BY MOTORCYCLISTS
In April 1988, the company was commissioned by the road safety division to undertake an observational survey of motorcyclists to determine their use of headlamps during daylight hours. An observation instrument was designed. Observations were commenced on Monday 18th April and the vast majority (1100 out of 1350) were carried out over the next two weeks. The remaining observations were largely those scheduled on weekday non peak times when the traffic flow had been very light. Only privately owned South Australian registered motorcycles are reported in this study, and observations were undertaken only in fine weather. Following the introduction, this report describes: the sample; observation data; profile of the motorcycles and their owners; type of helmet; and headlamp use.
