SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS' FUNCTION AND ACCIDENT RISK FOR UNPROTECTED ROAD-USERS
SIGNALREGLERADE KORSNINGARS FUNKTION OCH OLYCKSRISK FOER OSKYDDADE TRAFIKANTER
The aim of the project was to study the unprotected road users' risk and change in behaviour, partly when introducing a signal at an intersection, and partly when using various functions in signal techniques and geometric designs at signalized four-way intersections. This part of the report deals with pedestrians only. The studies were made at two different types of intersection before and after these were signalized, and also in 24 different signalized zebra crossings with varying signal functions and geometric designs. Safety has also been studied regarding the four geometric variables, namely the existence of refuge, the zebra-crossings location at the intersection, and the number of lanes to and from the latter. On average the accident risk for a green-walker is 70-80% lower where the departing road only has one lane compared to two in a similar traffic density. The presence of a refuge does not affect the risks for green-walking pedestrians but the zebra-crossing location does. (a)
