At falkoeping (and norsholm) tests have been made during summer 1986 on a method of compaction control proposed for use on unbound layers in road construction and at the same time a system designated sds-001, produced by geodynamik ab for documenting results in measurements with a roller-mounted compactometer. The tests have been conducted jointly between the national road administration, the vti, skanska, byggentreprenorerna, dynapac and geodynamik ab. The compaction control is based on recording and assessing changes in soil firmness and rigidity achieved during compaction under prevailing known conditions regarding parameters such as water ratio, and localizing areas with weak bearing capacity that require special attention through further compaction or other measures. To inspect and assess qualitative properties after compaction, the proposal contains a determination of the degree of compaction. The results indicate that after adding the experience gained from the tests, the proposed method of compaction control should provide a basis for preliminary guidelines as part of the construction directives of the national road administration. Tests of the sds-001 documentation system have shown that it facilitates assessment of the effect of compaction. A monitor screen shows directly the variations in status of the compacted surface in terms of firmness and the areas where bearing capacity is poorest. However the system needs to be extended to facilitate rapid localization of these weak areas on the working surface and to further aid the assessment of the effect of continued compaction. (a)
