VIPS II - A NEW COMPUTER SYSTEM FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT PLANNING --TRANSPORTATION PLANNING METHODS. PROCEEDINGS OF SEMINAR C HELD AT THE PTRC SUMMER ANNUAL MEETING, BATH UNIVERSITY ENGLAND, 7-11 SEPTEMBER 1987, VOLUME P290
Since 1979, ab storstockholms lokaltrafik, sl (Stockholm transport) has used the vips computer system for all design and evaluation of public transport networks. This utilization has yielded substantial improvements in level of service and/or lower costs. The most essential parts of the vips system are: route network analysis (rna) and frequency optimization (fqo). For a given network and fare structure to be evaluated, the program calculates costs, revenues, productivity factors, travel times, level of service and simulates the passengers' choice of routes. In April 1987 an even more advanced, more flexible system, especially concerning the rna was developed. The new system is called vips II. Main features of the new rna are: -one may either assume that the passengers know or are unaware of the time table. The assumption will influence level of service and assignment; -normaly intervals between services cannot be coordinated, which is the basic assumption. However, in those cases where several routes along a specific segment actually are evenly spaced, this fact can be considered; - since waiting and transferring may be perceived as annoying at different stops (e.g. Outdoors, indoors), each stop may be given a specific weight. Similarly, one may apply a separate weight for each mode (metro, bus, mini-bus etc), if modes are appreciated differently; -congestion and other disturbances cause delays and uneven intervals. Irregularity, or punctuality, is considered for each individual stop on each route. This means that the effects of bus priority measures may be evaluated; -various fare structures, like zonal fares, stage fares, may be analysed. Revenues per route, per operator and in total are presented; -results are presented in reports and in (colour) graphics, including for example level of service, loadings, revenues and costs, in total, but also per operator. While vips I was available on mainframes only, vips II is currently available on vax mini-and micro computers. Apple macintosh is used as graphical terminal, which means user-friendliness in terms of desk-top-publishing, etc. High resolution colour monitors may be used.
