THE NESTED INCREMENTAL LOGIT MODEL: THEORY AND APPLICATION TO MODAL CHOICE --TRANSPORTATION PLANNING METHODS. PROCEEDINGS OF SEMINAR C HELD AT THE PTRC SUMMER ANNUAL MEETING, BATH UNIVERSITY ENGLAND, 7-11 SEPTEMBER 1987, VOLUME P290
The specification of the incremental logit model is discussed, together with its application to a complex multi-mode study of surface access to heathrow airport. Current or observed mode shares may be adjusted to reflect the anticipated impacts of changes in transport level-of-service using the incremental logit model. It is markedly less demanding on input data than a conventional mode choice model, requiring only current mode shares and changes in level-of-service. In a recent study on which this model was used (the heathrow surface access study) two fundamental technical problems were addressed -(i) how to model new travel modes and (II) how to estimate consumer benefits from the model. While the approach is not novel, the literature does not appear to provide a full discussion of its specification nor reference to standard software packages, and we are not aware of its application to scheme appraisal in the UK (or Europe). The paper covers each of these subjects, the technical specification being described in relation to a general nested structure allowing typically ten or more modes in the model hierarchy.(a) for the covering abstract of the seminar see IRRD 816404.
