RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN FUNDING POLICY AND THE TRANSPORT SECTOR

Part i of the paper outlines the funding policy of the Asian development bank which promotes the economic and social progress of its developing member countries of the asia-pacific region. Part II deals with the transport and telecommunications sectors. The aim of the southeast Asian transport survey, carried out from 1968 to 1972 was to reduce transport congestion; most of the road projects that emerged from the survey -many of the roads were designed AS Expressways and motorways -helped increase the capacity of corridors already carrying heavy volumes of traffic. During the latter part of the 1970's higher priority was given to rural developments, the emphasis shifting to improving collector and feeder roads. The main thrust has been towards low-cost, quick return schemes providing high economic and social rates of return. Intermodal studies have been promoted, road sector taxation reviewed, road transport operations studied and traffic safety promoted. The bank has extended 56 loans totalling $1495 million for road projects from 1967 to 1986. For the covering abstract of the seminar see IRRD 816400.
