ASSESSING THE CONDITION OF BITUMINOUS ROADS --HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE. PROCEEDINGS OF SEMINAR F HELD AT THE PTRC TRANSPORT & PLANNING SUMMER ANNUAL MEETING, BATH UNIV. ENGLAND 7-11 SEPTEMBER 1987, VOLUME P293

In-situ and laboratory testing of road pavement materials is examined in support of the design of pavement strengthening. With the shift in emphasis away from new road construction to the reconstruction and strengthening of existing roads, research at the transport and Road Research Laboratory has been directed at a better understanding of the mechanisms by which pavements deteriorate in order to make the best use of their remaining strength. In the present study eight fully flexible motorway pavements were examined in detail by a combination of in-situ measurement and subsequent laboratory testing of materials recovered from site. Physical and structural properties such as elastic modulus were compared with overall pavement condition and performance, and calculations of pavement deflection and critical strain showed to what extent variations in foundation support and roadbase stiffness contributed to the variation in observed pavement condition. The methods adopted in this study contributed towards the preparation of the United Kingdom Department of Transport advice note ha/30/85, which offers guidance on the structural examination of bituminous pavements in preparation for structural strengthening. Although such studies do not always fully reveal the complex and interactive mechanisms by which pavements deteriorate, they can nevertheless make an important contribution to the design of strengthening, and the widespread adoption of the advice note will continue to add to our knowledge of pavement behaviour.(a) for the covering abstract of the seminar see IRRD 816254.
