THE EFFECTS OF AN URBAN BICYCLE NETWORK. RESULTS OF THE DELFT PROJECT ---PROCEEDINGS VELO CITY 87 INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS. PLANNING FOR THE URBAN CYCLIST, MARTINIHAL CENTRE GRONINGEN, NETHERLANDS, 22-26 SEPTEMBER, 1987.

In 1979 the municipality of Delft developed a masterplan for a bicycle network covering the whole city. The Ministry of Transport and public works decided to subsidize this plan, in order to obtain knowledge about the effect of bicycle networks on bicycle use and safety. Therefore the plan was accompanied by an evaluation study. This study was focussed on measures taken in a district of Delft and some major routes. Furthermore the effect of some major projects (a bridge and a tunnel) were evaluated. Studies prior to completion of the plan were carried out in 1982 and 1983, the after studies in 1985 and 1986. Results of these studies are published in separate reports. This paper presents the results of the overall evaluation of this project. The evaluation study produced a lot of knowledge about the functioning of urban bicycle networks. The study showed furthermore that the results obtained are representative for medium-sized cities in the Netherlands (50000-200000 inhabitants).
