CYCLING FACILITIES IN RURAL AREAS: PLANNING AND DESIGN ---PROCEEDINGS VELO CITY 87 INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS. PLANNING FOR THE URBAN CYCLIST, MARTINIHAL CENTRE GRONINGEN, NETHERLANDS, 22-26 SEPTEMBER, 1987.

Creating safe possibilities for cyclists in order to cycle from city to city or from village to village, can and must be a joint effort of local authorities, experts, residents and users of the route in question. The voice of road users and of others concerned should be heard when it comes to the planning of safe and comfortable cycle-routes. These target groups have to be adequately informed. In this respect social scientific research -apart from informational activities -could play an important role. Measures taken along these lines on cycle routes outside built-up areas make the routes in question safer, more aggreeable and more comfortable to the cyclists. Such measures also promote the use of the bicycle especially for recreational purposes. These are the main conclusions of the Dutch demonstration project 'cycle-routes outside built-up areas'.
