WORKING TO GET YOU MORE FOR YOUR MONEY
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' Standing Committee on Public Transportation established the Task Force on Guidelines for Specialized Vehicles in an effort to provide specifications for vehicles because the Committee did not think that transit providers were getting their money's worth when procuring vehicles. Specification guidelines were set for standard vans (primarily fifteen passenger), body-on-van chassis and body-on-truck chassis. These guidelines will also include raised roof and wheelchair lift specifications and be based on existing equipment and technology. Copies of vehicle specifications from all states have been requested by the task force, a questionnaire has been sent concerning vehicle specifications for that state, and the data received will be compiled and analyzed. Draft guidelines will be prepared and discussed with operators and manufacturers at several roundtable meetings in June 1989.
