DEVELOPMENT OF AIRPORT TERMINAL DESIGN CONCEPTS--A NEW PERSPECTIVE

The terminal design process and decisions on the suitability of design concepts for a particular airport and/or air transport demand remain not well-defined. The terminal design concept is central to the planning and design phases of airport development and will later influence airport operations--both on airside and landside. Studying the relationships between characteristics of demand and terminal design concepts is vitally important to understanding the potential influence of both on airport operations. This paper presents a chronology of airport development stages with a unified terminology of terminal design concepts defined in terms of terminal/apron configurations and their corresponding designations. It identifies possible variations in terminal design concepts known, and portrays, within a relative time frame, the evolution and development of these concepts from the simple terminal. Finally, important factors that influences the selection of terminal design concepts are stated and discussed in light of an Expert System approach suggested for the decision-making process. Interrelations between those factors are considered together with quantified input parameters to enable airport planners to arrive at an "optimum" decision--the best selection for particular airport and demand characteristics.
