GEOTECHNICAL INPUT TO MAJOR BRIDGE PROJECT
Brisbane's Gateway Bridge is 1,627 m long, and comprises approach spans of precast two-cell prestressed concrete box girders, and a single-cell prestressed concrete cast-in-place box girder central span cantilevers. Details of the geotechnical features, and the design and construction of the bridge are described. Geotechnical input played a major role in the design and construction of the bridge. Foundation conditions were highly variable along the length of the project and resulted in ranges of pier foundation systems comprising shallow pad footings on weathered rock, preformed concrete piles driven to rock, large diameter piles belled into rock, and large diameter piles with rock sockets. The design and construction of the bridge have provided valuable geotechnical experience of relevance to future development.
