A LOOK AT WHAT SOME STATES ARE DOING. SUBWAY STATION ART COMES TO AMERICA
The artistic station decoration in Cambridge, Massachusetts is described. The modern artwork incorporated within or along the approaches to the 4 stations of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Red Line North-west Extension in Boston, was the result of a million dollar citizen participation program. The MBTA has described its successful effort to humanize subway stations in a handbook produced jointly with the Cambridge Arts Council (CAC), "Arts On The Line: A Public Act Handbook." The handbook describes the artists' selection and community participation process involved in creating one of the largest public arts collections in an American transportation setting. The CAC has developed an art bank of slides and biographical data of artists who applied to the program.
